Personality answers:

What is your character most afraid of?

Jake is most afraid of himself. In the names of goals now made fruitless and irrelevant he has done some truly despicable things in spite of his young age, and taking the time to self-reflect and evaluate just how numb he's become is unacceptable. There is absolutely a chance for redemption within him but that requires a level of vulnerability he isn't prepared to accept, plus a significant amount of self-auditing to identify who he actually was vs who he is now. That requires him to relive his losses, so balancing both sides of himself (the idealistic young person who would hate who he's become and the ruthless man who can't step out of his own way) is far harder than just accepting that he is now a "bad person".

What would your character say is their best trait? What is truly their best trait?

Jake would say his greatest trait is his resiliency and strength. He has overcome tremendous obstacles in the form of war, starvation, poverty, and familial loss all with the ever-hardening exterior of a young man determined to push forward and keep himself detached. These physical challenges in particular have been met with his own physical capability, engaging not only in emotional and psychological battles but real ones as well which have tested his capacity to do harm to others and withstand equal blows.

In reality, however, Jake undervalues and undersells his intelligence significantly. When what is arguably is his best feature is utilized correctly, it allows Jake to not only apply strategies to things he deems necessary – combat, money-making schemes, and social engineering – but allows him to extremely rapidly absorb knowledge. As an example, while held captive in Shanghai for only a few months he manages to learn to speak large portions of Cantonese – and to read it – just through observation alone. He's also shown to be very well-versed in international affairs for someone his age without a formal education, and is even highly gifted when it comes to musical instruments (notably the piano). This rapidity in learning information combined with his ability to retain it could be far more valuable than just physical strength if he applied it properly.

What is your character's biggest ambition at their current canon point? To what lengths would they go to see it to fruition?

Jake would answer money, but the true answer is closer to "distraction". Jake has fallen into a vicious cycle where what originally motivated him to take a darker path in life and become a mercenary is now no longer a pressing concern. However, he can't simply turn back and live his life like he isn't a man who's done those horrific things. So in turn, he seeks out easy, tangible rewards for short-term goals to give himself fleeting highs.

He speaks ceaselessly of money and when it comes to his limits we're given little evidence that he has any. Killing, treason, and widespread harm to humanity outside the boundaries of his own home are certainly all on the table, and while he isn't motivated by sadism the suffering of others doesn't seem to slow him in his pursuit of cold hard cash. What he plans to actually do with the money isn't known, though we can infer a good deal from his clear interest in fleeting pleasures – time spent with women, admiration of fast cars and bikes, and thrill-seeking.

What would be your character's lowest, darkest moment they've lived through? How did they respond to their troubles and face their demons?

Jake faced two incredibly challenging moments back to back. First, his squad leader within the mercenary group he joined betrayed them, leading to the deaths of all his comrades and the lasting facial scar that would ensure he wouldn't forget it. Second was the death of his mother, a sickly woman who served as Jake's sole motivation for acquiring money with such dubious company in the first place.

Both worked in perfect conjunction to harden him and turn his worldview sharply cynical. The two people who meant the most to him, one due to his love for her and the other due to the trust born of a mentorship, were gone. His life's purpose and his ability to rely on others evaporated in an instant, and his response was to make himself colder and far more independent. Since then he hasn't bonded with his squadmates on other missions and has kept to himself, shown to react emotionlessly even when they face death. His motivations have become selfish and his close personal relationships are now nonexistent, with his remaining greatest demon – himself – being left unfaced.

Inventory: His Nine-Oh-Nine (a 9mm sidearm), five flashbangs, two remotely detonated explosives (very small and local damage), and the clothes on his back.
Powers/Abilities: Jake is, on the surface, a normal human being. He has no supernatural powers or special abilities, but what he does have is a unique genetic structure. His father passed down through their bloodline some very powerful antibodies, the likes of which (through RE magic) give him immunity to the body-mutating viruses present within the series – and additionally even the power to adapt those viruses so that he receives all the power of a genetically modified zombie but none of the... actual zombieness. Jake, however, is blissfully unaware of this second part, knowing he's unusually strong and fast but not taking into account why that might be. In terms of that actual strength, he's shown to deal stronger hand to hand damage than he's able to achieve with a pistol and has enough resilience to get up and walk off an explosion or two before he's eventually downed.

For ease with in a much shorter bulleted list:

  • Enhanced strength

  • Enhanced durability

  • Viral immunity/adaptability

  • Samples: Text sample & action sample!
Player Goals: I would love to slowly develop Jake into someone who can form meaningful bonds with others, whether they're morally sound or not, and to see how the influences of his Natural Soul will play out with his purposeful detachment and disaffected nature. I think it'll force a lot of that self-analysis he's so scared of, and I'm excited! Also in terms of general plots, absolutely getting a little chaos and law-breaking up in here for the rebels.
Soul Choice: Golem (an arsenopyrite variety, which is made of iron, arsenic, and sulfur)
